Robert Mugabe Sacks Deputy To Pave Route To Power For Wife Grace?

Robert Mugabe has sacked his deputy, who had previously been seen as a likely successor, removing an obstacle to the ambitions of his wife to become the next president of Zimbabwe.

Emmerson Mnangagwa, a longtime ally of one of Africa’s longest serving leaders, was removed from office “with immediate effect”, the government said, opening the way to the possible appointment of Grace Mugabe, 53, to the post.

The move risks splitting the ruling Zanu PF party and even the military as Mr Mnangagwa has enjoyed the support of military generals and war veterans.
