England’s cricketers will bag over £1m if they beat West Indies at Eden Gardens on Sunday and become World Twenty20 champions. The prize money would represent a handy top-up to their annual earnings, especially as only five members of this England squad – Eoin Morgan, Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler, Joe Root and Ben Stokes – are on full ECB central contracts.

The win bonus, which would come from the coffers of the International Cricket Council, the tournament organisers, and not from the ECB, is understood not to have been a topic of discussion in the dressing-room ahead of Sunday’s final, where England hope to become the first team to win the World Twenty20 twice.
Even defeat would come with a little consolation: the runners-up at Eden Gardens will take home around £565,000.
