Spanish newspapers El Confidencial and Marca both claim the Portuguese has sealed a move to the Theatre of Dreams and will replace current United boss Louis Van Gaal on July 1.

And the ex-Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Porto boss has hinted that he could be in charge of the 13-time Premier League champions next season.

"No, I am not enjoying it. I can have everything I love at the same time, he told GQ when asked if he was enjoying his time off.

"I can have my family, I can have my friends, I can have my quiet life, which I also like, and I can have my football… I can have everything together and I don’t need to give up on one of them.

"To be fully happy I need everything, so I go back to football. I think it’s my natural habitat. I have worked since I can remember, and as a manager since 2000.

"I stopped when I left Chelsea in 2007, for a few months, and now is the second time I stop in 15 or 16 years, so it is not a drama.

"But for sure, I will be back soon."

Mourinho has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea last December.

United's pursuit of Mourinho, who has won 22 major trophies during his managerial career, has been hailed by many as a masterstroke by the Old Trafford hierarchy.

But Van Gaal, whose troops take on Chelsea later today, is refusing to believe that his bosses have made a move to replace him.

He said: “I cannot believe that there is a already a relationship between Jose Mourinho and Manchester United. I cannot believe that.

“Because I have seen what has been happening in the last two months and it was very difficult for me, for my wife, for my kids, for my grandkids, for my friends to cope with that.

“It is not the first country. I have said that also in Spain and also in Germany.

"I had to cope with that.“
