Gary Anderson Begins Championship Defence In Spectacular Style

GARY ANDERSON overcame “terrible” nerves to begin the defence of his William Hill World Darts title in style at the Ally Pally tonight.

Scotsman Anderson beat Andy Boulton 3-0 and he started like he had finished back in January when he lifted the crown.

Then he smashed in an amazing 19 180s as he beat Phil Taylor 7-6 and he began with a maximum this evening.

You would never have known he was suffering and he said afterwards: “I always get nervous, every round is the same, but tonight was terrible. I made it so much harder. I can have a nice Christmas now.”

After the holiday break, Anderson will meet Northern Ireland’s Daryl Gurney who knocked out Jamie Lewis 3-1.
The defending champion could not have asked for a better performance.

It was Boulton’s second game of the night after he had beaten Denmark’s Per Laursen 2-1 in a prelim in the first match of the championship to set up this clash.

Anderson’s fine start saw him win the first two sets 3-0 before Boulton responded in the third.

But Anderson had too much, winning it 3-2 on a checkout of 62, and ending with an average of 99.55.
