Schweinsteiger And Morgan Schneiderlin Pose Zero Threat, Says Rio Ferdinand

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has lambasted the club’s present midfield of missing the vital cutting edge to compete at the highest level.

Ferdinand, who won six Premier League titles during his 12 season at Old Trafford, remains unconvinced by manager Luis van Gaal’s marquee signings over the summer transfer window.

United snapped up France international Morgan Schneiderlin from League rivals Southampton for an eye-watering fee of £25million alongside the recruitment of Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger for what seemed a bargain £7million fee.

Both central midfielders were identified by Van Gaal to bolster his squad following the difficulties his team endured when Michael Carrick was sidelined through injury last season.

But for Ferdinand, who played alongside the likes of Paul Scholes and Roy Keane during his team at United, the new signings have failed to impress and offer very little threat going forward.

‘If I’m a central midfielder facing Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, I would not be worried. They pose zero threat,’ Ferdinand wrote in his Sun column.

Manchester United have been criticised this season for their lack of ability to find the net regularly, Paul Scholes even labeling their style of football as ‘boring’.

‘I think they’re brilliantly coached defensively. Sometimes you’ve got to do that against Barcelona or Real Madrid but not against Crystal Palace or CSKA Moscow at home.

‘It’s difficult to coach attractive football. Whether Van Gaal doesn’t allows it, I don’t know. It’s a boring style of football,’ Scholes said.
